FAQ

Frequently Asked Cheer Questions (FAQ)

Who can cheer for WAYFC?
Children who are residents of the West Allegheny School District and entering grades K-6 of the upcoming school year may participate in our WAYFC programs.

When do practices start?
Cheer Camp kicks off the season the last weekend of July. Practices generally start the first Monday of August. Cheer practices roughly 3 days per week until school starts and then drops to 2 days per week. Days may vary by squad. All practices are held at Donaldson Park.

When does the season begin and end?
The season generally starts mid August with an exhibition game and the regular season games end generally the second weekend of October. Playoffs generally start the third weekend of October and end with the Super Bowl around the first weekend of November. The WPYFL hosts a Senior Bowl the weekend following playoffs for all 6th grade athletes.

What items does my cheerleader need to purchase?
The organization provides a uniform for the season which includes a skirt, vest and crop top.
For 2021, all cheerleaders will need to purchase the essential package which includes: shoes, bow, booty shorts for under skirt, warm up pants & jacket, camp shorts & tank.
All cheerleaders must have the red/silver poms. If you are returning from the 2019 season and have poms, you will not need to purchase them.
We offer an optional backpack to store their gear for practices and games.
In addition, it is recommended that cheerleaders use some sort of bag with their name on it if they are not purchasing the backpack. We recommed stretchy gloves and a fleece headband to cover their ears for chilly days as well as a clear raincoat for inclement weather.

Is it ok to miss practice to participate in another activity?
Cheer is 100% a team sport and attendance is very important. Missing practices affects the entire team and may limit what they can do. Stunt groups may not be able to practice or perform, a dance may need to be rechoreographed, etc. Regularly missing practices may affect your child's role on the team.

Uniform purchases/maintenance
